Because transit is messier than people assume, a pallet gets forked, stacked, jostled onto a truck, unloaded, and restacked before it reaches its destination, and every handoff is a chance for boxes to shift or topple. It doesn’t take much movement to crush a corner or crack what’s inside. In practice, that means starting the wrap at the base of the pallet, working upward in overlapping layers, and pulling the film tight enough that it grips without crushing anything fragile underneath. Get the tension right and a pallet of, say, bottled drinks can go through a rough delivery run without a single carton sliding out of place.
That stability is also what makes the load easier to move in the first place — forklift drivers aren’t fighting a stack that wants to shift the moment it’s lifted.
Here’s the part that’s easy to miss: this wrap secures the load, but it doesn’t cushion anything. If what’s inside those boxes is fragile, the protection needs to be in place before the wrap ever goes on.
For genuinely delicate items — glassware, ceramics, electronics — small bubble wrap is usually the first line of defence. It absorbs shocks that would otherwise travel straight through to the product; it’s light enough not to add real bulk or shipping cost, and it works on almost anything with a surface that can crack or scratch.
For products that need to avoid scuffing — think furniture finishes, printed packaging, anything cosmetic — a lighter paper wrapping roll often does the job better than bubble wrap. It’s used to wrap individual items, separate products inside a carton, and fill small gaps, all without bulking out the box.
For something sturdier, kraft paper is the go-to. It’s tougher than standard wrapping paper, holds up well as void fill, and does a decent job of stopping products from sliding around inside their own carton — which matters, because a lot of “transit damage” actually happens inside the box, not just between boxes on the pallet.
